Flag Day: Celebrating National Unity and Pride.

Flag Day holds immense significance as a celebration of national unity, pride, and values. It is a time when Americans come together to honor the symbol that represents their nation's history, ideals, and unity. The flag serves as a powerful reminder of the shared values that bind America as a society: freedom, justice, equality, and opportunity. It stands tall as a beacon of hope, inspiring individuals to strive for a better future and promoting a sense of belonging and patriotism.

History of Flag Day

Flag Day originated from a simple idea that captured the heart of a nation. It was on June 14th, 1777, that the Continental Congress adopted “the Stars and Stripes” as the official flag of the United States. An excerpt from the Journals of the Continental Congress read: "Resolved, that the Flag of the thirteen United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the Union is thirteen stars, white on a blue field, representing a new constellation."

This historic moment laid the foundation for an annual commemoration, established by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916, where Americans would honor their flag and what it represented. Today, it has been reported (through a YouGovAmerica survey) that 51% of Americans have an American flag in their home.

Did you know the flag’s original design had 13 alternating red and white stripes but lacked the familiar constellations of stars? It was Betsy Ross, the celebrated seamstress, who introduced the iconic stars into the design. The 50-star flag, as we know it today, was later designed in 1958 by Bob G. Heft, a high school student from Ohio.
