Xiaomi is extremely popular in Asian markets for offering the best value-for-money devices at incredible prices. Their Redmi Note series is the most popular one keeping the cash registers running. The Redmi Note 7 is one of the most important devices in their lineup in its entire history as it's the first device under the new Redmi brand of smartphones. It was, therefore, imperative, that Xiaomi's engineering team would give all the beans to create a one-of-its-kind device in the affordable price brackets. Xiaomi's CEO Lei Jun discussed some of the efforts that went into making the Redmi Note 7 and one of them is waterproofing.

When I say waterproofing, I mean more of water resistance. These days, premium smartphones come with a certain amount of water resistance built into them. These devices are ranked on several levels based on their capability to resent water ingress. Since Redmi is Xiaomi's latest baby brand and they wanted their first device to echo the same touch of premium-ness that any other flagship phone from a rival brand would boast, they preferred to give it water resistance.

In a video shared by Lei Jun on Weibo, the Xiaomi CEO tears apart a Redmi Note 7 and starts showing all the watertight seals inside the device, The Redmi Note 7 features watertight seals around all the buttons on its edges, the SIM card tray, headphone jack and charging port. The earpiece and loudspeaker also feature a protective membrane to keep moisture at bay. The camera module also features watertight seals around its edges to reduce the chances of water ingress.

That said, the Redmi Note 7 doesn't feature any kind of official IP rating. Therefore, the phone should hold up against the water splashes and light rains. Don't expect the Redmi Note 7 to survive a dip in the swimming pool.
Xiaomi says that the Redmi Note 7 has undergone the same levels of quality checks that its higher-priced flagship grade devices go through. The company is so confident of its quality checks that it offers an extended period of warranty for 18 months, which is higher than the industry standard 12 months or, in some cases, 6 months.

The Redmi Note 7 is presently only selling in China and a Pro variant with a more powerful 48-megapixel camera module is slated to make an appearance later in the year. Going by the trends, Xiaomi could end up offering the Redmi Note 7 Pro in markets outside China such as India and other European countries.
