Pros
  • Great value
  • Lightweight and comfortable
  • Sleek design
  • Features noise-cancelling
Cons
  • Lacks some on-ear controls

Great value, a sleek design and clear audio quality come together in this pair of JBL earbuds. To block out any office chatter or street noise, just turn on adaptive noise cancelling. If you’re crossing the street or want to be aware of your environment, ambient mode will enable you to hear without having to take your earbuds out. “The noise-cancellation is highly effective — I can't hear anything at all when that setting is on,” one tester says. “I really appreciate how easy it is to toggle the noise cancellation on and off with a simple tap.”

Our Lab pros found these earbuds extremely comfortable to wear, as well as portable and lightweight to carry around. “I have smaller ears and have tried many different earphones, but these are the most comfortable I've tried,” one tester says. We were further impressed by the earbuds' whopping 40+ total hours of claimed battery life. Though testers wish that you could adjust the volume using on-ear controls, most users will find everything that they need in this versatile pair of headphones.

JBL Vibe Beam

Pros
  • Affordable
  • Light, compact case
  • Comfortable
Cons
  • Sound quality could be improved

Though JBL offers a wide selection of budget earbuds, it's hard to find a pair more affordable than the Vibe Beam. While they don't feature noise cancellation, our experts found their fit secure, isolating and comfortable. In Lab tests, the setup was smooth and the JBL app offered a variety of customization options for your desired sound. According to Greenwald, the sound quality isn’t quite as impressive as other JBL pairs and the bass could be improved, but that’s expected for a lower price point.

“These earbuds would be great for a family of smaller kids when you don't need to spend a ton on earbuds,” one tester says. In addition to its compact case and quick, USB-C charging, our pros also appreciate that battery life is high with a claimed 32 hours total and an IP54 rating means that they can handle some dirt and rain (though we wouldn’t drop these in the pool).

JBL Reflect Aero

Reflect Aero
Pros
  • Small, compact case
  • Good sound quality
  • Case comes with attached strap
  • Waterproof
Cons
  • May not be as comfortable as other earbuds depending on your ear

Need a pair of earbuds that can handle everyday wear and tear, like some water exposure? The Reflect Aero features an IP68 rating, meaning that they’re waterproof and can be submerged up to five meters for 30 minutes, according to the brand. In addition to their rugged and durable design, they feature noise-cancelling and decent sound quality. “The sound quality is pretty good on these earbuds and very clear, although I would have preferred more bass,” one tester shares.

When it comes to comfort, our pros warn that the earbuds’ winged tips may not be for everyone and can be hard to put in place initially, though some testers found that the earbuds fit snuggly and stayed in place well. Multiple testers also raved about the earbuds’ small, sleek case and the super handy attached strap. “The strap on the case makes the earbuds easier to travel with or find in your bag,” one tester shares. Testers were also impressed by the earbuds’ long battery life, which should last you up to 24 hours.

JBL Tour Pro 2

Tour Pro 2
Pros
  • Great sound quality
  • Smart case features built-in display
  • Features noise cancelling
Cons
  • Expensive

If you have some wiggle room in your budget and want wireless noise-cancelling earbuds with fantastic sound quality, our pros recommend the pricier Tour Pro 2. What sets these earbuds apart from others is the built-in display on the smart case, which lets you control and operate your earbuds without having to reach for your phone. For instance, you can play or pause songs, control the volume, read message notifications, answer calls and adjust sound modes with a quick tap. These earbuds also feature adaptative noise cancelling, which enables the earbuds to adjust to your surroundings (i.e., a noisy street) to optimize noise reduction.

In Lab tests, the Tour Pro 2 obtained top overall scores for their ease of use and performance. According to Lab Assistant Nik Greenwald, “These have nice quality sound for music that doesn’t sound too harsh in the high range.” Plus, their impressive claimed battery life of 40 total hours means you won’t have to recharge your earbuds too frequently.

Pros
  • Comfortable over-ear design
  • Lightweight
  • Feature noise cancellation
  • Easy to use and pair
Cons
  • Noise cancellation not as effective as more premium pairs

Earbuds are convenient and portable, but sometimes nothing beats the comfort of over-ear headphones, like when you’re traveling on a plane or spending hours in a Zoom meeting. Our pros found these over-ear headphones from JBL to be both lightweight and super comfy thanks to cushioned earbuds. They feature noise-cancellation technology that effectively blocks out pesky sounds, though they were outperformed by other pairs of headphones in our recent noise-cancellation headphone test. Nevertheless, Greenwald describes their sound quality as “very bright and clean,” and especially great when listening to spoken audio content. The Tour One M2 also scored well for its ease of use and easy pairing to Bluetooth. Plus, these feature an impressive 50 hours of claimed battery life with ANC off or 30 hours total with it on.

Best JBL Earbuds for Working Out

JBL Endurance Peak 3

Endurance Peak 3
Pros
  • Waterproof
  • Impressive battery life
Cons
  • Bulky, large case

Like the Reflect Aero, these earbuds are IP68-rated and can handle some serious sweat. But what makes them the best wireless earbuds for running or working out is their design, which rests in your earbud but also hooks around your ear for a more secure hold. Though their case is bulkier and larger than most, these feature some of the best-claimed battery life of any JBL earbuds with up to 50 hours total — so, you can go ahead and take them on a weekend road trip or daylong hike and never have to worry about recharging. Just keep in mind that these earbuds don’t have any noise cancellation technology so they won’t be quite as effective as other pairs on this list at blocking external sounds.

How we test the best JBL earbuds

line break

The experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute have been testing headphones and earbuds for more than a decade and have logged more than 300 hours of listening in the past five years. In our most recent evaluations at the Good Housekeeping Institute led by Nik Greenwald, six pairs of JBL earbuds were tested.

To narrow down the best JBL earbuds, we first evaluate each pair for ease of use and setup as well as the design, rating whether earbuds are portable, lightweight or comfortable to wear. We then assess how quickly earbuds pair to Bluetooth, whether their fit is secure and adjustable as well as the intuitiveness of on-ear controls. To test the performance of noise-cancelling headphones, we evaluate the following: noise-cancelling capabilities (if applicable), audio spectrum analysis and the subjective sound quality while listening to music and podcasts.

  • Noise cancelling: Our experts test noise cancelling by putting on the headphones and turning on active noise cancellation without playing any other audio from the headphones. From there, we use an audio analysis software called REW to output pink noise (a sound with a consistent frequency that mimics hum and buzzes representative of the noise you try to filter out with noise-cancelling headphones in real life) from the speakers of a laptop placed in front of us at -70dBFS pk. We then increase the volume until we can hear the pink noise through the headphones and note the level where the noise breaks through the noise cancellation.
  • Audio spectrum analysis: Next, spectrum analysis involves using MiniDSP EARS, or a headphone analysis rig featuring molds of the human ear, so that it can analyze the spectrum of each pair of headphones via microphones inside of the ears. Headphones are placed on the rig and a spectrum analysis is run, producing a graph that reveals where the headphones have boosts and cuts along the frequency spectrum. We pay particular attention to the low and high end of the spectrum to ensure a balanced frequency response. We tend to favor headphones with a flatter response, which indicates that the headphones reproduce music and audio exactly as the mixing or mastering engineer produced it. The spectrum analysis also gives us an idea of how much color or distortion is added to the signal that leaves the headphones. We favor headphones that reproduce audio with as little distortion as possible.
  • Sound quality: Lastly, we run subjective sound quality evaluations by having our test engineers in the Media & Tech Lab listen to a variety of audio content and rate the sound quality of the headphones.

Next, our experts assess the durability of each pair of headphones by reviewing water and dust protection claims (aka IP or Ingress Protection ratings) from the manufacturer. Though it isn't a dealbreaker for us if headphones aren’t water-resistant, we do have a slight bias toward pairs with sturdier construction and the ability to withstand the elements. Finally, we evaluate consumer tester feedback to assess the earbuds' sound quality and whether or not they felt comfortable (and stayed secure) during everyday use.

What to consider when shopping for JBL earbuds

line break

✔️ Battery life: Earbuds feature varying degrees of claimed battery life. If you're someone who always forgets to recharge your devices, consider earbuds with a higher total battery life so the earbuds' case recharges your earbuds while they're being safely stored.

✔️ Type: JBL sells both in-ear and over-ear earbuds and headphones. While in-ear earbuds tend to be more portable and lightweight, they also may cause ear fatigue after prolonged use. Over-ear headphones, on the other hand, are heavier and require more storage space in your backpack or purse, but may be more comfortable and even better at isolating outside noise.

✔️ Fit: Most in-ear JBL earbuds will come with a range of silicone tips. If you find that your earbuds don't fit you well, make sure that you swap out the tips for ones that feel tight and secure inside your ear canal. Not only does this prevent earbuds from falling out, but a great fit improves overall audio performance. You can also consider earbuds with wings that hook inside your ear for an even sturdier hold or ones with hooks that go outside and around your ear to help keep them in place.

✔️ Water resistance: If you plan on working out in your JBL earbuds, consider a pair with an IP (ingress protection) rating of at least IPX4, which means that they should be able to withstand sweat and some light rain. The first number refers to solids like dust and sand, while the second number refers to liquids. The higher the number, the more durable and water-resistant you can expect your earbuds to be.

✔️ Noise cancellation: Noise cancellation technology (designed to produce a mirror image sound wave in your ear to cancel out external noise) is a handy feature to have when you're trying to block out distractions, but it tends to drive up the overall price. If you plan on using your earbuds in a hectic office setting, while commuting or similar situations, you may benefit from noise cancellation to help focus on your music, podcast or other audio. If, however, you plan on casually using your earbuds for quick phone calls to friends and like to be somewhat aware of your surroundings, noise cancellation may not be as important to you.
