How to Backdate a Facebook Post

Facebook is a social media content destination. Like it or not, the platform continues to perform well within the digital media space and thus it can be important for businesses to have this presence. When managing a Facebook page the question may come up regarding backdating posts or rather changing the date something was posted to further in the past. Backdating is something that should only be done in specific instances such as migrating content from other platforms, etc. due to the fact that Facebook will display a clock icon indicating that some trickery has taken place whether malicious or not to the user.

How to Backdate a Post

Backdating a Facebook post is simple to do and only requires four easy steps. This method works on any version of Facebook whether it is desktop or mobile/app based.

Step One: Navigate to the Facebook Page

An admin should navigate to the Facebook page that the post needs to be edited. General users cannot do this, only admins, editors, etc.

Step Two: Find the Post to Backdate

Scroll down to the post that needs to be backdated.

Step Three: Select the Ellipsis

On the right hand side of the post there should be an ellipsis that can be selected. This contains a list of options for admins to do with the post which we will cover each in detail separately such as deleting the post or turning off comments.

Step Four: Backdate the Post

Now that the list is open, select the Change Date option. Once that selection is made a window will pop-up with the post editor where page managers can “change” the original post date. After this is done, select Save Changes.

Conclusion

Backdating a post is something that has little use in my opinion except for the aforementioned. Viewers will always see a clock icon indicating that the post has been backdated. Also viewers can see the edit history of a post just like admins and editors can. Why is that? Well Facebook wants pages and content to not only be honest but also transparent. If there are bad actors in the space then Facebook wants to give users the tools to sniff them and that content out.
