Thank you. A string of messages (iMessages and texts) and my responses from one sender have disappeared from my iphone so I have a gap of a few months. I only just noticed it when I looked for a previous message so my phone will have backed up to icloud since then. I’m assuming I may need to contact the carrier to retrieve the messages.

No. Only you have access to them
What you’d have to do if lost...
Restore your iPhone from a Backup:
Have an backups of this iPhone prior to this upgrade If so, then restore your iPhone from one that particularly contains this info (your most recent backup). If not, then take this as a learning experience, knowing to always backup your device prior to making any major change to it(i.e. upgrade installations). Important: Back up you iPhone prior to performing this restoration, should anything go wrong from here on out.
No, messages on your phone can only be deleted by you. The sender can delete the messages on their end if they choose to do so.

The sender cannot delete any messages on your iPhone when you are using the Apple Messages app on your iPhone.
If you are referring to another messenger app, such as WhatsApp for example, then that app has a feature that will allow the sender to delete his/her responses. If the sender does that, then there is no way for the recipient to recover those texts.

If iMessages (blue bubble) are missing, your carrier cannot retrieve those.
If you have another device, like an iPad or Mac, the messages might be there.
