To calculate electricity consumption you need to know the power for each of the appliances you use and the time they are used. The total for all these consumptions within the billing period is equivalent to the consumption for which your bill is calculated.
That is why you need to know the power for your appliances and lighting and take into account for how much time you use them. It is also advisable to be aware of your actual consumption at the moment. All this, together with being fully aware of your habits and being able to adjust them is the key to improving your energy efficiency, and to choosing the Endesa plan that best suits your routine to help you save on your bill.

Calculate the kW/h consumed by domestic appliances
We have spoken about how useful it is to know how much your appliances consume. With this in mind, we have prepared a list of the most common appliances and lighting, together with a range of power most common in these devices:
- Television: 100-400 W, which is equivalent to 0.1-0.4 kW.
- Air conditioning: 900-2,000 W, which is equivalent to 0.9-2 kW.
- Microwave: 900-1,500 W, which is equivalent to 0.9-1.5 kW.
- Fridge: 200-400 W, which is equivalent to 0.2-0.4 kW.
- Oven: 1,200-3,000 W, which is equivalent to 1.2-3 kW.
- Incandescent lamp: 30-80 W, which is equivalent to 0.03-0.08 kW.
- LED light bulb: 3-12 W, which is equivalent to 0.003-0.012 kW.
To calculate consumption, you multiply the power in kW by the hours you use the devices per day, per week or per month.
For example, let's examine the consumption at the home of Agnes and Roman:
The TV has a power of 200 W, that is, 0.2 kW. They have it on for 2 hours a day, so their daily consumption is 0.4kWh. If you want to know your monthly consumption, you just multiply the daily consumption by the number of days in the month, for example, 30. So you would have a monthly consumption of 12 kWh.
If you make the same calculation for the consumption of all the appliances in the house of Agnes and Roman, you would know their exact consumption.
This information is very useful not only to be able to control the use of appliances and use them efficiently, but it will also help you choose the most suitable appliances. You should remember that all appliances should be accompanied by the corresponding information on efficiency, as well as the technical specifications which should include the power.
How many kWh does a house consume per day?
According to Red Eléctrica Española (REE), the average monthly consumption of a household in Spain is 270 kWh, which gives an average annual consumption of 3,272 kWh. The Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE) puts the figure at 3,487 kWh in its report on Consumption in the Residential Sector in Spain (2020-2019). This document gives us a very clear idea of electricity consumption in Spanish households: of the total electricity consumption, heating accounts for 7.4%, air conditioning, 7.5%. Kitchen appliances account for 9.3% of consumption, while fridges and freezers account for 2.3%. Home lighting accounts for 11.7% of consumption, while the rest of appliances account for 55.2%. Finally, the stand-by function for devices consumes 6.6%.
After analysing consumption for each of the appliances, the report provides us with the following percentages: the fridge consumes 30.6%, while freezers account for 6.1%. The washing machine accounts for 11.8%, while dishwashers account for 6.1% and clothes dryers for 3.3%. Ovens consume 8.3%. TV and other screens account for 12.2% and computers 7.4% The report ends with the consumption of the standby function, which is 10.7%, and other appliances, with 3.5%.
Domestic appliances that consume the most
Leaving aside heating and air conditioning, these are the four domestic appliances that consume the most in your home:
1. The fridge
According to the IDAE report, 99.6% of Spanish households have a fridge. We have seen that it can consume 30.6% of the total energy, because it is an appliance that should always be switched on. It should be taken into account that when the temperature is low, the fridge does not work at full capacity and does not use maximum power. Also, the higher the efficiency labelling, the lower the consumption. According to estimates by the IDAE, a fridge consumes about 655 kWh per year.
2. Television
According to Statista, 98.6% of Spanish households have a TV. It consumes 12.2% of the total. If we watch television for an average of 228 minutes a day, this represents 1,387 hours of television per year. IDAE estimates that a single TV at home would mean an annual consumption of 119 kWh.
3. Washing machine
As seen above, the washing machine represents 11.8% of total electricity consumption in Spanish homes and 92.9% of these have one. Again, the efficiency of the appliance should be taken into account as this will reduce consumption. Washing in cold or using energy savings programmes is another decisive factor. According to IDAE, washing machines consume about 254 kWh per year.
3. Oven
The National Institute of Statistics (INE) points out that 88.3% of Spanish households have an oven. According to IDAE, ovens account for 8.3% of electricity consumption. The type of oven, how responsibly you use it, its energy efficiency label, as well as the number of hours it is kept on will determine the volume of consumption. It is estimated that every time an oven is turned on for an hour, it uses 1.5 kWh of electricity. If you use the oven for two hours a week, it would consume about 150 kWh per year.

Are there any other factors that affect a household's electricity consumption?
Annual electricity consumption also depends on other factors, including:
- Number of people in the household: the more people live in a house the more time is spent cooking, the more laundry is done, the refrigerators are of greater capacity, etc. Homes will also generally be larger, so they will need more energy for heating and air-conditioning.
- Characteristics of the house: well-insulated homes need less energy to maintain a correct temperature. If the orientation and the type windows provide more light, this will help reduce the need for electric lighting.
- Lifestyle: as we have already mentioned a number of times, lifestyle is decisive when it comes to establishing annual electricity consumption. Doing all you can to maximise efficiency will actively reduce energy consumption. This includes controlling the use of appliances, avoiding standby and choosing efficient appliances and energy-efficient programmes.
