iphone 8 plus & 5G

I have read that Verizon will be going to 5G in December of 2022 and that older phones will stop working. I spoke with a Verizon associate and they said 6 and 7 will no longer work, but they are not sure about the 8. Will I need to buy a new phone or will the iPhone 8 plus accept the update?

They don't know what they're talking about.

Verizon is shutting down their 3G network, like all of the other US carriers and most carriers around the globe.

The 6, 7, and 8 are all LTE capable phones. They will continue to work just fine.

An iPhone 8 does not have the hardware to use the 5G band. However it will still be able to use 4G/LTE so your phone will still work for years to come.

The associate didn't tell you the correct information. Most carriers are dropping the 3G signal but will still be using 4G/LTE along with 5G. Your iPhone 8 is capable of working on the 4G band so your phone will be fine.
