Can Dogs Get Cl?

Can CL spread to horses?

Primarily a disease of economic importance in small ruminants, CL can infect and cause clinical disease in horses, cattle, swine, fowl and other animals as well. Two biotypes of the bacteria exist with one biotype affecting small ruminants and another affecting horses. Cattle seem to be susceptible to both biotypes.

What animals can get CL?

Although CL is typically considered a disease of sheep and goats, it also occurs more sporadically in horses, cattle, camelids, swine, wild ruminants, fowl, and people. Because of its zoonotic potential, care should be taken when handling infected animals or purulent exudate from active, draining lesions.

How do I know if my abscess is CL?

The first usual indication of CL infection is the presence of an external abscess visible behind the ears, beneath the jaw or neck, on the shoulders, or in the rear flank region. Abscesses may also appear between the hind legs where a scrotal sac or udder attaches.J

Is CL contagious to humans?

The infection is potentially transmissible to humans, so wear protective clothing when working with infected or possibly infected animals. This protects both humans and the rest of the herd. Diagnosis is generally based on finding a fairly firm abscess in the location of a lymph node.

How long does CL stay in the ground?

If an abscess ruptures in a pasture, the organic material (soil, grass) is contaminated, and the pasture should be rested for a prolonged period of time; CL has been shown to survive in soil for 8 months.

Can CL in goats be spread to dogs?

CL can be transferred from goats to sheep, cattle, horses, and camels…but not dogs!

Can dogs get Caseous lymphadenitis?

The bacteria penetrate the skin or mucus membranes, usually through an injury from shearing, tagging, tail docking or castration. Animals also can become infected through contact with pus from the open draining lesions of other animals or through inhalation or ingestion of the bacteria.

How do you get rid of CL in goats?

There is no cure for CL. However, CL abscesses must be treated to prevent ruptures and further contamination of other animals and environments. If you have an animal that develops an abscess: Immediately isolate the animal from the herd.J

How is Caseous lymphadenitis spread?

Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis, the bacterium that causes the disease CL, is spread from animal to animal primarily through contact with material from subcutaneous abscesses (pus) or fomites (inanimate objects) contaminated with abscess material.

How do you stop CL in sheep?

There are commercial CL vaccines available for sheep and goats. The vaccine may help reduce the prevalence of CL within a flock but will not prevent all new infections or cure existing infections. Consult a veterinarian to discuss vaccine usage in your flock, especially before using the vaccine in a naïve flock.

How is Caseous lymphadenitis transmitted?

Caseous lymphadenitis is caused by the bacterium Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis. Transmission occurs either directly between sheep during close confinement or, indirectly, via contaminated shearing equipment.

Can CL be transmitted to dogs?

Many environmental bacteria can cause abscesses via traumatic wounds, but unlike CL these are sporadic and not readily transmitted from animal to animal. Animals with CL abscesses should be quarantined until the abscess has completely healed or be culled.

Can other animals get CL from goats?

Caseous lymphadenitis (CL) is a bacterial infection found mostly in sheep and goats, though other species such as horses, cows, camelids, pigs, fowl and people can be infected.

Is CL contagious to other animals?

Primarily a disease of economic importance in small ruminants, CL can infect and cause clinical disease in horses, cattle, swine, fowl and other animals as well.
