Can I Build A Shelter For A Squirrel?

Will squirrels use a squirrel house?

One way to protect your garden or your birdhouse is to provide a sanctioned area for squirrels. A squirrel house, built properly, will encourage squirrels to stay in their area and out of yours. A squirrel house, like a birdhouse, is used to feed and shelter squirrels.

How do you set up a squirrel house?

A squirrel house should be made of 1-inch lumber, not sanded smooth. The entrance hole should be 3 inches in diameter and facing south. The house should be placed 20 to 30 feet above ground on a tree at least 10 inches in diameter and close to a branch, so the squirrels can easily dart inside.

Where is the best place to put a squirrel house?

Place the box in woodland rather than on a lone tree. It should be anywhere from 10 to 12 feet off of the ground. Squirrels usually build their nests higher than that, but that is as high as many people are willing to go up a ladder!
